Habitat Map
This project was a collaborative project between micheal heimbinder and myself in the fall 2006, with the support of the Banff New Media Institute.
“Habitatmap.org is an environmental health justice project combining community
knowledge with scientific study in pursuit of just and sustainable urban spaces. Our
mapping tools are designed to maximize the impact of community voices on the unfolding
of urban space. ”
Initially this project was conceived as mobile media project that would allow users to submit environmental hazard information directly from their PDA’s and cell phones, thus increasing local awareness and dialog. Using Cell Phone tower triangulation, Google Maps, and HP research assistance, we had hoped to create a platform to receive information and push information in a manner that would warn users upon entering areas of high toxicity, that was both accessible and user generated.
Due to different carriers and cellphone platforms, the initial idea was never realized.
-here is a pdf that goes into more depth about the project concept.
micheal heimbinder has taken the lead and is continuing the project as it develops in the future.
